We live in an ever-changing world of social media and digital engagement. With students and alumni steeped in the digital media realm, colleges and universities must make social media a priority. While social media can be daunting by the sheer number of platforms alone (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Tumblr, Periscope, Instagram, Snapchat… the list goes on and on!), there are ways to successfully manage and utilize multiple channels in your marketing and recruitment efforts.

How is it done? We got the lowdown from Noelle Seybert, Social Media Manager at Pepperdine University, in our November webcast. With over 300 separate social media accounts to manage, Noelle knows her stuff. Here are some highlights from her presentation:

  1. pepperdine-uBefore anything else, do a social media audit. What social media accounts have already been created? Is there activity on those accounts? Who manages them? There are many important questions to ask during this phase in order to better gage your school’s current social media landscape.
  2. Find centralization in decentralization. There’s a delicate balance to having a consistent and unified brand while still allowing various teams to make use of their own unique voices. With coordination and planning, it’s possible to achieve this balance, so your primary messages are disseminated with a creative, personalized flare.
  3. Create a call to action. At the end of the day, the goal of social media is to spur engagement and real-life action. A successful social media campaign helps your audience move from thinking about your posts to creating an emotional investment in your brand that eventually leads to action.
  4. Get the right tools. With so many platforms full of activities, it’s important to be able to showcase a holistic picture of your social media brand. Using our OU Mashup tool, Pepperdine created a one-stop interactive display that further drives engagement on their website.
